It is a known fact, that a large portion of the City’s waterways and rivers are often polluted by multiple waste sources.
Lukhozi Consulting Engineers, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town, launched the stormwater “#quickwins” interventions on Friday, 14 October 2022 as part of the Hout Bay Comprehensive Study.
This project compliments short, medium and long-term solutions to this major challenge in Hout Bay and possibly other areas within the City.
Lukhozi Consulting Engineers was involved in a number of field investigations, within the Hout Bay River Catchment, primarily in the area of Imizamo Yethu (IY) and documented the following:
- Contaminated grey water from multiple sources is flowing from the streets as surface discharge into the underground stormwater networks and then into the Disa River
- Solid waste build-up within the sewer network, from incorrect disposal practices, directly results in the overflow of raw sewage into the stormwater systems
The interventions, as per the #quickwins implementation campaign, will manage the pollution as follows:
Solid waste management
- Implementation of litter socks, litter screens, sediment forebays and lockable manhole covers – will assist in the prevention of solid waste build-up within the stormwater system
Liquid Waste Management
- Inline and surface low-flow diversion structures – will divert contaminated greywater from the stormwater system into the sewer system
These interventions will go a long way in improving water quality within the natural water course, and will continue to work towards the ultimate goal of addressing the various sources of pollution
We look forward to this journey with the City of Cape Town
