Installation of Prime rated Generators in different Eastern Cape Hospitals

Due to loadshedding and aging infrastructure, a few hospitals are finding it difficult to have constant supply of electricity. The project to install prime rated generators was implemented to assist the hospitals with constant supply of electricity.  The hospitals that were supplied with prime generators were All Saints Hospital, Stutterheim Hospital, Greenville Hospital, Dora Nginza Hospital, St Barnabas Hospital.

The installation of generators brought relief to communities and hospital staff; that hospitals would be able to provide intended medical services without any electrical interruptions.  Hospitals will concentrate on patient care and saving of lives.

The installed generators were prime rated, which means they are designed to run as main power supply for unlimited number of hours under variable loads. This is important for hospitals as the time to restore power is not often guaranteed. Some hospitals were provided with 48-hour diesel tanks which directly connected to the generators.

The location of the hospitals was a challenge as some were deep in rural areas, the roads and availability of installation materials was a challenge. The coordination of testing the automatic changeover from the grid supply to the generator had to be carefully planned without disturbing the critical operations of the hospital.

To successfully deliver the generators to the hospitals fully functional with a 48-hour external diesel tanks, meant the generators could run longer than and hospital services would continue. The communities will get the medical services they require.
