Lourens River 1J Environmental Monitoring Committee
The Lourens River Phase 1J project commenced in 2024 and an Environmental Monitoring Committee (EMC) was established to monitor compliance of the environmental approvals. The public was invited to be part of the EMC, and an initial meeting was held where members could volunteer and be voted in. The first meeting was held after the EMC was established.
The main objectives are to prevent flooding of Somerset West and Strand along the Lourens River. The flood alleviation interventions will respond to the different flow capacities of the river and its ability to contain flood risk. The project seeks to address the increase of the different flow capacities of the Lourens River to prevent flooding in existing and future development areas.
The purpose of the EMC is to be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the EMP and resolving any environmental aspects that may arise during the construction phase of the project. The members are accountable for ensuring that environmentally sound principles guide the project during the construction phase. The EMC currently consists of residents and landowners, Somerset West Ratepayers Association, members of local organizations such as Friends of the Paardevlei, The Bird Club, Lourens River Conservation Society, etc.
The EMC current meetings monthly, in the Strand Council Chambers, where project progress is discussed, and any specific environmental matters that may arise. Once the project is completed, the EMC will no longer be required.
