Lukhozi Commences with the Liveable Urban Waterway Programme (LUWP) for the City of Cape Town
Lukhozi Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by the City of Cape Town (the City) for Phase 1 of the LUWP.
Cape Town’s recent drought has sharply focused attention on water scarcity in a progressively more unpredictable climate. Emerging from the drought is a renewed interest in water (in all its forms) and the complex interaction between engineering, environmental and social systems. The City has since developed a Water Strategy that expresses the commitment to become a water sensitive city by 2040.
One of the programmes developed to move towards this vision is the Liveable Urban Waterways Programme (LUWP). Water Sensitive Design, Waterway Rehabilitation, Nature-Based Solutions and Green Infrastructure – these are some of the aims of implementing the LUWP.
What makes a waterway liveable?
The LUW Monitoring Framework defines a liveable waterway by the six elements of liveability:
The project includes five work packages, consisting of 11 river reaches within the Sand River Catchment, and are as follows:
- Sand & Langevlei Canals
- Keyser River
- Westlake River
- Spaanschemat & Prinskasteel Rivers
- Grootboschkloof River
A collaborative approach has been taken in embarking on this programme with the City by involving various specialists, city departments, statutory bodies, the community, and the hosting of co-design workshops.
We look forward to this journey with the City of Cape Town, alongside other specialist service providers, namely:
