LIVEABLE URBAN WATERWAYS PROGRAMME (LUWP): COLLABORATIVE CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS (27 AUGUST – 03 SEPTEMBER 2022), CAPE TOWN

LIVEABLE URBAN WATERWAYS PROGRAMME (LUWP): COLLABORATIVE CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS
Picture1

Collaborative co-design workshops were recently held in various project areas in Cape Town as part of Lukhozi Consulting Engineers’ appointment by the City of Cape Town for Phase 1 of the LUWP.

The LUWP is divided into five (5) work packages with project sites in the general Steenberg, Constantia, Tokai, and Westlake areas. The Sand River catchment is the broader site for pilot projects of the LUW Programme.

The waterways of Cape Town show varying elements of liveability, and the LUW programme aims to enhance these elements where they are present and reinstate them where they have been lost.

The five (5) work packages include:

  • Grootboschkloof River Corridor Rehabilitation and Public Space Enhancements.
  • Spaanschemat, and Prinskasteel River Corridor Rehabilitation and Public Space Enhancements.
  • Sand and Langevlei Canal Rehabilitation.
  • Westlake River Corridor Rehabilitation and Public Space Enhancements.
  • Keyser River Corridor Rehabilitation and Public Space Enhancements.

In keeping with the principles of inclusive participation and engagement, communities from the aforementioned project areas were invited to the co-design workshops. Co-design workshops are spaces for creative collaborative input, rooted in participatory design and the proactive involvement of stakeholders in the early design phases of a project. The co-design workshops were scheduled as follows:

No. Date River Location
1 Saturday, 27 August 2022 Westlake River Westlake Place of Restoration
2 Thursday, 01 September 2022 Spaanschemat, Prinskasteel & Grootboschkloof Rivers Alphen Hall, Constantia Main Road
3 Saturday, 03 September 2022 Sand & Langevlei Canal, and the Keyser River Coniston Park Hall, Military Road

Participants were provided with an opportunity to share their experiences and stories in using the greenbelts and river corridors under study and creating collages to depict their ideal green spaces and waterways.

The participants were also provided with maps and reusable materials to build models that depict their ideal outcomes from the LUWP programme.

The workshops attracted persons from all walks of life, all passionate about rehabilitating our rivers and creating safe and useable green spaces for all to share.

Lukhozi Consulting Engineers would like to thank all the community members who attended and participated in the workshops for their time and valuable input.
